THE COMPANY
NKI Forlaget (NKI Publishing) is a medium-sized publishing company based just outside Oslo in Norway. The company publishes books for:
• Upper secondary school (mathematics, science, Norwegian, etc.)
• Universities and polytechnics (project management, engineering, English, etc.)
• Driving license-training (private cars, buses, trucks, vans) and compulsory training for professional drivers (transport and logistics).
• A diverse range of other areas (climate research, custom-made textbooks for selected vocational schools, etc.)
NKI Publishing has its own online bookshop and warehouse, and sells and distributes third-party books as well as its own titles. The company currently has a staff of 11 people (editorial, marketing, sales, production, logistics and management). NKI Publishing’s turnover has been in the range of 30-32 million NOK (3.6-3.8 million Euro) the last few years.
OWNERSHIP
NKI Publishing is owned by Anthon B. Nilsen Education. ABN Education is the second largest provider of private education in Norway. The company’s many schools are offering master and bachelor degree programs as well as post-secondary vocational programs in areas like communications and other creative disciplines, business administration, travel and tourism and healthcare. In addition, some of the institutions run by the company offer high school programs and international programs. ABN Education/NKI Distance Education is also Norway’s major provider of distant learning programs delivered via the Internet. In total, approximately 30 000 students participated in full time or part time programs delivered by ABN Education in 2007. ABN Education had a turnover of 540 million NOK in 2007 (64 million Euro).
HISTORY
NKI Publishing was formally launched in 1972, but the company has produced books and study material since 1963. Initially, the publications were aimed at students of engineering and other technical subjects. The company has since expanded into textbooks for upper secondary schools, universities and polytechnics. In addition, the company has developed a successful series of books for driving licence- and professional drivers’ training.
